Read and Write Biblical Hebrew- Five beginning steps

Learning a new language means learning and mastering new words. It is important for you to take enough time to study the new words. Although it can be challenging, learning a new language especially learning to read Hebrew can be a very interesting process. Keep in mind that you will need dedication and self-discipline to achieve success.

1.    Get a book for practice

In order to be able to understand the language, you need to find a book, or an online program to help you.  Fortunately, there are different types of resources that you can choose from. The best option for you is the Hebrew- English Tanakh. This is a Jewish Old testament that has been created with English translation to help you understand better.With this book, you will be able to understand different words of the language. The Hebrew verses are lined up in way that you can understand the translation of each word.

One thing you need to understand is that reading in Hebrew is very different fromreading the English language. Unlike the English language, Hebrew can be read from right to left.

2.    Have a list of the Hebrew consonants

So, it is important for you to figure out the consonants of the language; this can either be done through a book or learning Hebrew online. This is what will help you learn different sounds of the letters. One thing you need to understand is that the Hebrew language has 22 letters but there are only 20 consonants as there are two silent letters. You can take advantage of the internet to search for different consonants and the ways to pronounce them. One very interesting thing you will notice is that the consonants are same like the English consonants. It is pivotal for you to understand the consonants and the best way for you to do so is to have the list written down on cards.

3.    Have the Nikkud

The Nikkudis dots and markings that are placed under the letters. You will notice that the two silent letters mentioned beforeare pronounced using the diacritical marks. You can use the internet to know more about all the letters with the Nikkud marks.  These are essential when learning how to read Hebrew

4.    Practice writing

Once you have understood different Hebrew letters, you need to practice writing. You can begin by copying different verses of the Hebrew.But keep in mind that Hebrew is written from right to left. Therefore, you need to practice writing the language in this version. You can take some time to translate the words to English and then try to come up with the meaning of the words.

5.    Have fun

Learning the Hebrew language need not be complicated. You can add fun into it by trying to translate different words, like your name. You can write it in Hebrew and try to pronounce it.
